Before I begin with my blog, I would like to thank Ruchi for being a Great Mentor. She is super kind, patient, generous, and an Inspiration. Please follow Hook N Loop if you wanna learn how to do crochet.
What a peaceful day it was. I always wanted to learn how to do crochet, ever since I saw a little girl wearing her pink dress, supporting her mother in her small business — yes, a roadside business, which people don’t respect.
When I heard the prices of one crochet rose, or even a small key chain, I was shocked to know that it was expensive. Yes, they looked good. But they are expensive. During that period of time, I decided to learn how to do crochet, so that I can make it myself and gift it to my loved ones, but I never learnt it.
Until in my third year, it was the only thing left in my bucket list. So I decided to learn more about crochet.
Patriarchal society has made it such a stereotype that only women should learn about art and crafts. Men should focus on doing manly stuff like finances, budgeting, engineering.
Women have reached space, built things. Even our Finance Minister is a female.
What about men? They are not ready to learn more about dance, cooking, or being more warm.
Men and women who build themselves up in this manner are the matured ones.
What I learned from doing crochet? And why men specifically should learn how to do crochet?
What I Learned from Learning Crochet
Crochet improved my focus and concentration because every stitch needs attention.
It taught me patience — I cannot rush the process.
I learned to trust slow progress and enjoy the journey.
It improved my problem-solving skills when I had to undo and fix mistakes.
Crochet feels like meditation and reduces stress.
It gave me a break from screens and mental noise.
It improved my hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
I experienced a strong sense of accomplishment after creating something from scratch.
It helped me become more calm and emotionally balanced.
It increased my creativity and attention to detail.
Why Men Specifically Should Learn Crochet?
It breaks the stereotype that hobbies are gender-based.
It builds patience and calmness, qualities often ignored in men.
It develops emotional intelligence and gentleness.
A man who can create something handmade shows depth and confidence.
It improves the ability to sit quietly and focus, which helps in studies and work.
It teaches that strength is not only physical, but also mental and emotional.
It gives a unique skill that can be used to gift something meaningful.
It builds discipline through repetitive and careful work.
It helps reduce stress and overthinking.
It makes personality more balanced — creative, patient, and thoughtful.
I would like to thank Ruchi from Hook N Loop for being a great mentor. She was so calm while teaching, and I loved having conversations with her. The journey was great, and I still can’t believe I made a crochet by myself.
